Autumn leaves

I have always loved trees and the forest. Where I grew up the forest mainly was spruce, pine and birch. But moving closer to the Norwegian coast, where I live now, oak is also common. I think oak is one of the most beautiful trees together with maple. I like to photograph the oak leaves the whole year around, its shape is so beautiful. And the branches on the tree are so elegant and gives the tree such a wonderful shape.

Now it is November and almost all the leaves on my favourite oak trees has fallen to the ground. They are still beautiful, resting on the the field covered with frost, snow or droplets.

Soon the leaves will be covered with white snow and the trees stands naked until spring arrives and gives new life to next years leaves. I am looking forward to that.

Norwegian November

Winter can be a beautiful time with frosted leaves and and a drizzle of light snow over the green moss. But often it is heavy rain and constant lack of color. The sunrise is late in the morning and the sunset is early in the afternoon. But sometimes the sun shines and the trees covered with frost sparkles in the sunshine.

If you walk slowly and take time to notice your surroundings you will find colors or beautiful details like in the photos below. The little mushroom surprised by the first snow and a frosty night. A forgotten red apple outside an abandoned house and the ice crystals on the dry, brown fern leaves.

The first snow

It is late November and the other day the first snow started floating in the cold air. Quiet it fell to the ground like someone was sprinkling icing sugar over the landscape. The grainy, tiny snowflakes covered the dead, brown plants and brought back the shape of the leaves. Mushrooms was decorated with a layer of white ice crystals. The first hint of winter has arrived and soon the whole landscape will turn completely white.

Blueberry leaves

It is truly amazing to watch how natures color change through the year. Take the blueberry plant, in spring its leaves are all bright green and full of vitality. And through the summer the plant is using all its energy to flourish and produce sweet berries. When the berries are ripe and someone have picked them or they have just fallen to the ground the leaves color change from bright green to deep red, purple and blue.

Winter mood II

Winter recolors the forest
from green and yellow
to all shades of black and white

Cold rocks on the forest ground
grey and edgy
softly reshaped by layers of white snow

Tree logs dark and grey
naked and cold
carrying a few golden leaves that didn't fall

Black running water in the little creek
dark and mysterious
framed in softly by the snow

Moody winter

Here in Norway and Scandinavia the winter month of January can be though. It can be very cold and the days are quite short. So when the sky is grey and cloudy the surroundings look like a black and white landscape. Now that February has arrived the days are starting to get a little bit longer. Now the sun rise at 0815 and set at 1645.

Doing macro photography can be difficult this time of the year, as it is dependent of a sufficient amount of light. Photographing leaves is fun as they comes in so many shapes. During winter they turn grey or black, but some times you can find some that have some colors left. Like this rowan (in the photo below), it still has some deep brown color. The landscape behind is all in shades of grey and the brown leaf stand a little bit out due to the frosty edges. Winter may be colorless but it is beautiful in many ways.

Water

Water is an amazing element

turning into beautiful crystals and frozen droplets

decorating the dead leaves and plants in the forest

and giving them new life and beauty

during the cold winter season.

It is a wonderful thing that snow crystals

floating slowly through the air

is the element water

frozen into perfectly shaped stars and flowers

each and everyone different from each other.
